Have you just lost track of time wondering about something that catches your attention? This is how I live my life most days. For example, why do dogs smell each other’s butts as a way to meet each other? How did that happen? I have a hard time ignoring the design of that greeting.
Nature offers many things to contemplate and often works as a reset for my life. Do not fret my vampires, this is not a pro camping argument. But for one moment, I challenge you to push yourself into extreme curiosity.
Stare at a tree for ten seconds with the sole purpose of blocking everything else out and only looking at the tree. For the next five seconds notice the wind, or absence of the wind. The branches and leaves reacting to whatever the wind directs it to do. Follow the branches to the trunk. The center source of strength and growth for the tree. Notice the marks, the scars, the holes, the lines in the bark, the smooth spots and the direction the trunk seems to take. Is it straight up and down or does it weave left and right like a mesquite tree?
Take a moment to watch for bugs that might be traveling or nesting in the tree. Ants, birds, squirrels or any other life that uses the tree for shelter or food. Now follow that trunk all the way down to the ground. It is possible that this is where all that can be seen will stop. Some will have roots that are somewhat exposed from the ground.
This is where wonder starts. Do not stop this moment. Continue to take in the tree.
How far down do those roots go? How far do they spread?
We learned in elementary school that the roots are the foundation of strength for the tree. The roots create the stability for the trunk to be strong, they pull nutrients from the soil that allows the branches to spread, providing shade and possibly growing fruit or more seeds so that more trees can grow.
But the tree’s story, it’s life-giving purpose, is to produce oxygen. Oxygen! You and this tree are connected. Without trees, we die. We cannot breath. How spectacular is that? My guess is that you pass trees everyday and do not give a thought to the value they play in your life. This is true for me. This might seem a bit meditative, and I wouldn’t argue that point, but look at this as more of a logical conversation.
If we are overlooking the single object that provides life-giving resources more than most, how much are we missing humanity and its elements? A tree is here to provide shelter, food, oxygen and so much more.
What is a human here for? What function do humans serve? The thing about nature is that every organism can be pointed back to a purposefully functional existence (a reason for being here).
Why are humans here? Why am I here?
Why are you here?
I have spent most of my career and adult life providing unique angles to answering some of these questions. I believe with all of my heart, that I can help you answer questions like this for yourself. By taking time to focus on your life like we did with the tree, asking good, and maybe difficult questions we can discover or remind you of your function and purpose.
It can difficult, being a human-being. My goal is to help you simplify your existence so that you can live out your purpose With less anxiety and more confidence and peace of mind.
My stories will always be true, although sometimes embellished a bit. Nevertheless, you can expect truth from me. If I am sharing a fictional story, I will disclose that. Any story I share however, will be in service of you, an effort to connect with you through empathy.
